Heatmaps and Session Recordings: Understanding Why Visitors Leave

Your website attracts visitors, but few of them take action? With Microsoft Clarity's heatmaps and session recordings, discover exactly where your visitors click, hesitate and leave. A free, practical method that takes just 30 minutes per week.

By Nuredin Mohamed Ali

Your website attracts visitors, but very few of them fill in your form, request a quote or make a purchase. You are not alone: many SME websites in French-speaking Switzerland convert only a small share of their traffic. The real problem is that your usual statistics tell you how many people leave, but never why. That is precisely what heatmaps and session recordings reveal. Thanks to Microsoft Clarity, a completely free tool, this kind of analysis is now within reach of every business, with no dedicated budget and no technical skills required. Here is the method we apply at Digital Swiss Agency, condensed into 30 minutes per week.

What Google Analytics Will Never Tell You

Google Analytics answers quantitative questions very well: how many visitors, from which channel, on which pages, for how long. But imagine a Geneva-based fiduciary firm receiving 2,000 visits per month and only 10 contact requests. Its dashboard shows a 68% bounce rate on the "Pricing" page. And then what? That number does not tell you whether visitors leave because the prices are poorly presented, because the contact button is invisible on mobile, or because something on the page is broken.

Heatmaps and session recordings fill exactly this gap: they show the real behaviour of each visitor, gesture by gesture. You move from "68% of people leave" to "visitors click on an image that is not clickable, never see the quote button and abandon the form at the sixth field". The difference is enormous: in the first case you have a statistic, in the second you have a list of concrete fixes.

Microsoft Clarity: The Free Tool That Changes Everything

There are several behavioural analytics tools on the market (Hotjar, Mouseflow, Smartlook), but most of them become paid as soon as your traffic exceeds a few hundred sessions. Microsoft Clarity is free, with no traffic limit, no sampling and no credit card required. For a Swiss SME, it is the obvious choice: you get the same insights as major e-commerce players, for CHF 0.

Set Up in 10 Minutes

  1. Create an account on clarity.microsoft.com with a business email address.
  2. Add your website and copy the small tracking script provided.
  3. Paste it into your site's header: via a dedicated plugin on WordPress, via the site settings on Wix or Webflow, or via Google Tag Manager.
  4. Enable sensitive data masking: Clarity blurs the content of form fields by default, an important point to remain compliant with the Swiss nFADP.

After 24 to 48 hours, you will already have your first usable heatmaps and session recordings.

The Three Heatmaps to Examine First

1. The Click Map

It highlights the areas where your visitors click the most. Two anomalies come up constantly on SME websites: massive clicks on non-clickable elements (a team photo, a logo, an underlined heading) and, conversely, a main call-to-action button that barely gets any clicks. Every "dead" click is a visitor's intention falling into the void.

2. The Scroll Map

The scroll map shows what percentage of visitors reaches each section of the page. It is often a shock: on many homepages, only a minority of visitors reach the middle of the page. If your "Request a quote" button sits at the very bottom, you are hiding it from most of them. The fix is simple: move the call to action above the fold and repeat it further down.

3. The Ignored Areas Map on Mobile

A large share of Swiss SME traffic now comes from smartphones. Systematically compare your mobile and desktop heatmaps: a menu that is perfectly visible on a large screen can become impossible to find on mobile, and a phone number that is not tappable drives away visitors in a hurry who simply wanted to call you.

Session Recordings: Looking Over Your Visitors' Shoulders

Recordings replay a visitor's anonymised navigation: mouse movements, scrolling, clicks, hesitations. There is no need to watch everything: Clarity automatically detects four warning signals that save you precious time.

  • Rage clicks: the visitor clicks frantically on the same spot. Almost always the sign of an element that looks clickable but is not, or of a button that does not respond.
  • Dead clicks: an isolated click with no effect. Frequent on product images or service headings.
  • Quick backs: the visitor lands on a page and leaves within a few seconds. Often the symptom of a page that loads too slowly or content that does not match the promise of the link they clicked.
  • JavaScript errors: Clarity links sessions to technical errors. A form that silently fails on iPhone can cost you dozens of enquiries per month without you ever knowing.

The 30-Minutes-a-Week Method

The classic trap: installing the tool, watching three recordings out of curiosity, then never opening the dashboard again. Here is a simple weekly routine, tested with our clients, that fits into half an hour.

  1. Minutes 1 to 10 — the warning signals. Open Clarity, filter the week's sessions containing rage clicks and quick backs on your key pages (homepage, services, contact). Watch the 5 most representative recordings at double speed.
  2. Minutes 11 to 20 — one page, one heatmap. Choose a single important page and study its click map and scroll map, starting with the mobile version. Note where attention stops and which elements are ignored.
  3. Minutes 21 to 30 — one single fix. Identify the most profitable correction (moving a button, shortening a form, making an image clickable) and schedule it immediately. One fix per week, actually implemented, is worth more than ten ideas that never happen.

The following week, check the effect of your change before launching a new one. In three months, you will have fixed a dozen friction points, with a cumulative effect on your conversions.

A Fictional Worked Example: What 30 Minutes Can Earn You

A fictional example of a service SME in Geneva: 1,500 monthly visits, a 9-field quote form, a conversion rate of 1.2%, i.e. 18 enquiries per month. The recordings show that half of the abandonments happen at the "company registration number" field, which many visitors do not know how to fill in. By removing it and reducing the form to 5 fields, the conversion rate rises to 2.1% within six weeks, i.e. 31 monthly enquiries.

With an average mandate of CHF 800 and a 30% closing rate, these 13 additional enquiries represent approximately CHF 3,100 in additional monthly revenue, or more than CHF 37,000 per year. Cost of the operation: a free tool and two hours of work. Few marketing actions offer such a return on investment.

The Five Mistakes to Avoid

  • Jumping to conclusions. Ten sessions do not make a trend. Wait for at least 100 to 200 sessions per page before deciding.
  • Changing everything at once. If you modify five elements simultaneously, it becomes impossible to know which one worked.
  • Ignoring mobile. That is often where a large share of your visitors — and many of the friction points — are.
  • Neglecting data protection. Make sure field masking is enabled and mention the tool in your privacy policy, in line with the nFADP.
  • Observing without acting. A heatmap converts no one: only the fix it inspires moves your results forward.

When the Analysis Reveals a Deeper Problem

Sometimes Clarity highlights problems that a simple adjustment cannot solve: a confusing structure, a slow website, a dated design that drives people away within seconds. In that case, a conversion-focused redesign is more profitable than successive patches — which is exactly the purpose of our website creation service in Geneva. And if your recordings show healthy behaviour but too few visitors, the priority lever becomes acquisition: SEO work in Geneva for the long term, or Google Ads campaigns for immediate results. Behavioural analysis tells you precisely which of these projects to start first.

Conclusion: Stop Guessing, Start Observing

Every week without behavioural analysis, visitors leave your website for reasons you could fix in an hour. Microsoft Clarity makes this observation free and accessible; the 30-minute method makes it sustainable. Install the tool today, block a weekly slot in your calendar, and let your visitors' real behaviour guide your decisions. Your website will stop being a silent shop window and become your best salesperson.
